Trims, Makers & Printers
Trims
At Pure Pod, we design our products with minimal trims, most of which are made from natural sources such as wood, bamboo and coconut. We minimise any other trims used due to the lack of information the suppliers can give us about how they are made.
As sustainability and eco concepts are new in the clothing industry we are limited to what we can use and finding out about how things are made and where they come from. Over the years of producing Pure Pod we have found this area slowly growing and more trims suppliers developing more eco trims.
Printers
Pure Pod’s printers are concerned about their impact on the environment. As printing processes and inks (we only use water-based inks) become ever more eco-friendly, Pure Pod will continue to seek out the most sustainable printers and processes.
Makers
Pure Pod only contracts to garment makers who do not use ‘Sweat Shop’ labour and take care of their staff. Our manufacturers are based in Byron Bay, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and now in India. Some of our manufacturers are self-employed and work the hours they want for the price they choose. Many of them go for their morning walks on the beach and live a relaxing life style. Our Indian-based manufacturers are Fair Trade Certified, incorporating sound environmental and human resource practices.
Jewellery
Pod Pieces are natural, sustainable and organic fashion accessories, hand made in South America from the Tagua nut. Made from the Ivory Nut Palm (vegetable ivory) by local communities, this unique jewellery collection is environmentally friendly, contemporary and complements the Pure Pod brand. Each Tagua nut has a distinctive grain and natural shape which gives a different look to every piece. Produced in Colombia in safe and healthy working conditions, most of the artisans that create this jewellery are women who are head of their families. They earn fair wages and the manufacturer is in the process of gaining Fair Trade Federation membership and Fair Trade certification.
Dying Process
Most of our fabrics are dyed with low impact dyeing that are restricted to the use of dyes and dye mixtures free of heavy metals. The only additional chemicals used on some of our fabrics are salt and soda ash. Each supplier has different methods but we only use suppliers whose practices are environmentally sustainable who are always looking at new ways to reduce the impact of their textile production.
Many of our fabrics are aquired from GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) accredited companies. The aim of the standard is to define requirements to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer. The standards work to help the organic supply chain and further developing global organic fiber and textile infrastructure.
